The Victoria Regional Pickleball Association (VRPA) has provided a Fall update, including the descriptions of its next series of programs (both instructional and non-instructional/play opportunities) beginning in late October. Updates for a Christmas tournament and group insurance for Saanich and City of Victoria play sites was also shared.
VRPA Programs
Registration will open on October 6, 2025 at 8:00 a.m.
In addition, the VRPA is working with the University of Victoria to offer a new suite of programs and will provide members with that information once it has been finalized.
In September and October, the association offered 71 opportunities, 58 of which garnered enough signups to run. Determining exactly which programs, times, and facilities appeal most to members has been somewhat challenging according to the VRPA, with the Board actively working on solutions.
The VRPA also welcomes Denise Wheeldon to the Board as the new lead for play and learning opportunities. She will be joined by Anne Tremblay and Heather Fawkes, who will assist in overseeing and planning offerings moving forward.
Christmas Tournament Planning Underway
Planning is underway for the Christmas tournament, scheduled for December 13-14 at Pearkes Arena.
Insurance for Pickleball Play Groups
Board member Brian Harrigan has been collaborating with VRPA member Malcolm Macauley to address concerns with the 2025 requirement that play groups purchase insurance for their block bookings at Pearkes (Saanich) and City of Victoria sites.
When the VRPA books time at either municipality, insurance is provided through Pickleball Canada, since anything booked under VRPA is considered “sanctioned.” However, if an individual books on behalf of their play group, it is not a VRPA event and therefore not sanctioned—meaning the group must purchase its own insurance.
The Board is considering a proposal that would allow such groups to make their bookings through the VRPA. If adopted, those bookings would become VRPA events, and VRPA/Pickleball Canada insurance would apply (eliminating the need for additional insurance).
Members are encouraged to share their thoughts with the Board as it deliberates on this issue.
