Shawnigan Pickleball Invitational crowns inaugural champions

The Shawnigan Lake Pickleball Club hosted it’s inaugural Invitational, Sept. 20, 2025 at Shawnigan Lake Pickleball Club in Shawnigan Lake Village. Four teams were invited to play in a double knockout with four additional Island club teams on what was a picturesque Saturday afternoon.

At tournament’s end, the guest teams excelled to reach the ‘Final 4’. Play on the courts ‘was fantastic’, according to event organizer, Rob Mac Donald. Players Paul Fitzgerald and Darren McLean, were impressive on the day, going through the ‘A Side’ of the tournament bracket undefeated, and setting them up with a finals meeting against Martin Haaff and Gerry Peng.

In the end, Haaff and Peng prevailed to have the honour of being the first pairing to have their names engraved on the Pickle Bowl trophy. Trevor Rueland and partner Josh Mitchell finished in third place, with Andrew Brix and Ian Prescott taking 4th.

“The courts were full of spectators all day and everyone seemed to have a great time,” said Mac Donald. “There’s lots of talk about next year already.”

Mac Donald added that they are looking to forward to welcoming women’s and expanded playing divisions in future iterations.
