Selecting Your Pickleball Paddle: Surface Materials

  • March 27, 2025
tyler pickleball surface

Another factor in selecting paddles is the material that’s on the actual hitting surface. One of the more popular surfaces is carbon fibre. There are a few variations of carbon fibre including raw carbon fibre, as well as carbon fibre with a treatment over top of it. Carbon fiber is more of a soft material—it absorbs the energy coming in from the paddle.

Carbon fibre is more of a control oriented surface. It’s also a really rough surface, contributing to a lot of spin off of the paddles. It’s very gritty, almost like sandpaper-like feeling.

Selkirk has a fibreglass technology, which is quite a stiff material so it’s more power oriented. Other technologies include a composite material or a graphite material which can also give you a little bit more spin. These are not as quite as durable as carbon fibre, but is still a very viable choice.
