DUPR announces major update to rating algorithm

DUPR has made an important update to their rating algorithm. Ratings will change based on performance—independent of winning or losing. ‍

DUPR has indicated players’ rating will now move based on ‘performance vs. expectation’. Every match has an expected score, calculated from the ratings of the players involved.

‍If players score more than expected, their DUPR rating will go up – even in a loss. If a player scores less, it will go down – even in a win. Prior to the DUPR update, the winning team rating would always go up, while the losing team would go down.

Doubles Example:

If a team is expected to win 11–3 but wins 11–8, their DUPR rating will go down.

‍The losing team, which was expected to score fewer points, will go up.

Singles Example:

‍If you’re a 3.5 playing against a 4.0, we expect the score to be 5-11. If you instead lose 9-11, you’ve overperformed expectations, so you will see your rating go up.
