Community Spotlight: Port Alberni Pickleball Thriving

  • May 20, 2025
portalberni pickleball

Pickleball in Port Alberni is thriving, and the city’s Parks, Recreation and Culture department is increasing availability to meet the demand. Participation in the sport varies within the region, with players attending weekly sessions, while others hit the courts at occasional drop-in locations and times.

The Recreation department offers four weekly Spring sessions and one Summer/Winter session in the Glenwood Sports Centre and Coulson Rink when the ice is removed. These drop-in sessions are targeted at anyone who wants to learn how to play or is looking for additional court space to play their weekly games. These have been well attended and have been a great starting point for people interested in playing.

Outside of the City’s efforts to service the pickleball community, the Port Alberni Picklers, a local club, organizes large group sessions weekly. The Sunshine Club, a 55+ organization, also offers various leisure activities for seniors.

“The reception for increased availability has been great,” said Parks, Recreation and Culture, Recreation Programmer, Dave Osborne. “Currently there are only a few locations to play outdoors year round, so we have been able to utilize our two indoor spaces which has increased the access to the sport. Participants have been excited about the additional court space and various drop-in times.”

Osborne adds that the continued increase in popularity has resulted in a high demand for senior participants, although numbers across the board have also trending upwards.

“Demand is also growing in other demographics as we have seen in increase in popularity in young adults looking for a fun recreational activity to play with a partner or small group,” added Osborne. “Overall the demand is growing and we are glad we are able to support growth within our community.”
