Community and inclusion highlighted at Sooke Pickleball Club tournament

  • July 20, 2025

July 20, 2025 (Sooke) – Sooke Pickleball Club hosted a one-day pickleball tournament, The Mini Brine Battle, July 19 at Art Morris Park. The event welcomed 90 players across six divisions, ranging from under 3.49 to 4.0+, with participants from Sooke, the Westshore, Victoria, Cowichan, and beyond.

In addition to the dedicated courts at the park, four temporary courts were added on the adjacent tennis court to bring the total number to seven. Gaia’s Coffee Cart brought the perfect fuel for the event’s early morning games, while VIPB Title Sponsor, Courtside Sports, offered a chance for players to demo paddles midday, which added to the festive atmosphere.

Tournament co-director, Asaan Maherali, remarked on the day’s highlights, including players cheering each other on, celebrating big moments, and making connections that he says the Club hope last beyond the event.

“One of the most rewarding parts of the day was seeing how many players were experiencing the Sooke Pickleball Club courts for the first time,” added Maherali. “Welcoming new faces to our home courts felt really meaningful, and the energy and setting made for a memorable experience.”

Sooke Pickleball Club sees new players hitting the courts every week, and plays host to similar events like The Mini Brine Battle, such as their Royalty of the Court series. The Club also offer lessons for beginner and intermediate players.

“It was fantastic to see so many new players taking part in their very first tournament,” said Maherali. “We’re proud to have created a supportive and fun atmosphere for them to compete. That sense of community and inclusion is what we value most, and it was on full display all day long. A huge thank you to my tournament co-director, Fabian Duque-Park, and all the volunteers for their help in making the day a success.”
