Community Spotlight: Tofino’s pickleball popularity on the rise

  • February 13, 2025

Pickleball in Vancouver Island’s District of Tofino has continued to grow. Last summer featured the opening of four dedicated outdoor courts, catering to a mix of experienced and new players of all ages.

The West Coast community has added additional options for drop-in sessions, following a rise in popularity for the sport in the region, according to District of Tofino Recreation Programmer Kelsey Wallace.

“Until recently, we only offered morning sessions four times per week, from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., which wasn’t ideal for people who work during the day,” said Wallace. “But now, we’ve added an evening drop-in at Wickaninnish Community School, and it’s been amazing to see a whole new group of players come out!”

Wallace adds that The District of Tofino worked closely with their local pickleball club to make sure the new courts—opened in June 2024—were built to a high standard. Located at Village Green Park, the courts have been greeted with great reception from the pickleball community, and are packed on dry days.

“Huge shoutout to the local pickleball club for keeping the courts in great shape,” added Wallace. “Sweeping off pine needles and using a giant squeegee to clear rainwater, which is definitely needed in our rainforest climate. Pickleball is growing fast, and we’re so excited to support it!”

Between new outdoor courts and plenty of indoor drop-in options, there are lots of ways for people to get out and play for the local community. More info on playing pickleball in Tofino can be found through tofino.ca, the Pickleball Tofino Facebook page, and vancouverislandpickleball.ca.
